aira Garduño grew up in a small community in the State of Mexico. From an early age, she knew what it meant to be singled out for not fitting other people’s expectations.
Years later, unemployed during the pandemic, she got on a bicycle and began earning a living as an app-based delivery worker in Mexico City.
On the streets, she discovered another side to the freedom and independence the platforms promised: an algorithm setting the pace of her work, decisions she could not negotiate, and risks she faced largely on her own.
An unexpected encounter opened up a different possibility: organizing with others to change the rules. Through Saira’s experience, this episode explores who controls working conditions in the platform economy and how workers can build a collective voice to defend their rights..
