EPISODE # 6

We Want to Be Heard at Work and at Home

We Want to Be Heard at Work and at Home

arichuy works at a maquiladora, a factory producing goods for export, in Torreón, Mexico. Her days are divided between long factory shifts and responsibilities at home, where much of the housework and caregiving falls to her.

At the factory, she and her women coworkers face low wages and discrimination. When they seek support from their union, they realize they barely know who represents them and have never taken part in electing those representatives.

Gradually, learning about her rights and connecting with other women changes how Marichuy understands and confronts these injustices. Those encounters open up possibilities for questioning conditions she has experienced both at work and at home.

Through her story, this episode explores the connections between paid work, unpaid care, and women’s participation in union life. It asks what meaningful representation looks like when women want their experiences and concerns to be heard.
